GOG at History of Games 2025

We are very happy and proud to announce this year’s History of Games 2025 special partner:

The partnership results in a special panel, to be held as a plenary session on September 3rd 2025, the first day of the conference.

Game Preservation in Practice: Legal, Technical, and Archival Dimensions

Game preservation is often treated as an archival or theoretical endeavor — but restoring games to a playable state requires confronting a dense web of legal, technical, and institutional obstacles. This panel, hosted by GOG, brings together practitioners working on the front lines of game restoration:

Piotr Gnyp (Senior PR & Strategic Projects, GOG) will moderate moderates a discussion with:

Marcin Paczyński (Senior Business Development Manager, GOG) on the legal and rights-clearance hurdles involved in bringing legacy titles to modern audiences;

Adam Ziółkowski (Technical Producer, GOG) on the engineering efforts required to adapt obsolete code and infrastructure for contemporary systems;

Jan Kremer (Project lead of Pixelarchiv.cz, Národní filmový archiv) on archiving and video game museum views on video game preservation.

The session will be followed by a 45-minute open Q&A. Expect a frank discussion of failed restoration attempts, success stories like Alpha Protocol, and the archival processing of the XLand.
